Thousands of Americans go to a dialysis center about three times a week so that they can live a somewhat normal life. What is dialysis? Patients who have diminished kidney function go to have their blood safely removed, run through a dialyzer (a filtering machine which is also referred to as an artificial kidney) and then pumped back into the body. The filter machine contains a chemical solution which removes waste products and cleanses the blood before it is pumped back into the body. One such chemical solution is called GranuFlo, a product made by Fresenius Medical.
Currently, the lawsuits against Fresenius have been amassing due to the fact that not only have a number of dialysis patients suffered heart problems (heart arrhythmia, heart attack, coma, death), but Fresenius Medical was aware of the potential side effects, yet did not share this vital information with patients nor healthcare providers alike.
As the world’s largest provider of kidney dialysis services and products, GranuFlo’s manufacturer was under the watchful eye of the FDA, who issued a Class 1 Recall of GranuFlo after investigating the harmful effects of the product. So what causes the heart problems? The chemical used in dialysis to cleanse the blood is traditionally a sodium (mono) acetate. GranuFlo, however, uses a sodium diacetate which can cause higher levels of bicarbonate in the body. These higher levels of bicarbonate can lead to a condition known as metabolic alkalosis which can cause serious health problems, as mentioned earlier.
